Lunch Hour Career Visits

Making decisions about your future involves researching various careers first.  Pre-register in the Career Centre for the following "lunch box" career information sessions available to ALL STUDENTS in ALL GRADES.  Bring your lunch!!!

Registered Nurse -  A registered nurse from the Red Deer Regional Hospital will be at Thurber during the lunch hour on Thursday, February 17th to give students information about her profession. 

RCMP - Constable Kosack will be hosting a noon hour session on Tuesday, March 8th for students who are interested in finding about more about careers with the RCMP.  As we unable to set up "job shadows" for students to explore this occupation, this is your opportunity to investigate the RCMP as a possible career choice.  

Firefighter/Paramedic - Bob Boudreau, Inspector/Investigator for Red Deer Emergency Services is coming to our school on Wednesday, March 2nd to give students information on a career as a firefighter/paramedic.  Bob has extensive experience in the field and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in this area. 

Miller Thomson Foundation National Scholarship

The Miller Thomson Foundation awards 100 entrance scholarships of $3000 each to qualifying students.  Students who apply must have made a postitive contribution to their school through extracurricular activities, volunteered outside of school, and maintained a 87% grade average throughout high school.  Application information is available in the Career Centre.  Deadline for applications:  March 1st

Rotary Career Opportunity Fund Awards

The Rotary Career Opportunity Fund is a joint program of the Rotary Club of Red Deer, the Red Deer and District Community Foundation, the Red Deer Public School Board, and the Red Deer Catholic Regional Division.  In 2011, 20 awards of $1200 each will be made to deserving students based on:  need for financial assistance in continuing studies, demonstrated leadership and motivational skills through participation in student, community, and/or business activities, and academic achievement that is adequate to gain admittance to the post-secondary school and program of choice.  Deadline for applications to be submitted to the Career Centre is Friday, April 15th. 

4-H Scholarships/ Bursaries

There are many scholarships and bursaries available for students to apply for that have been involved in 4-H clubs.  Visit

Why Media Matters On-line Essay/Video Contest

One student from Lindsay Thurber will be awarded with full tuition to attend the Gulf Islands Film & Television School in Galiano during summer 2011 to create thought provoking media.  To win, students must submit a three minute video or write an essay which must be submitted by May 1st, 2011.  Winners will be announced at the 16th EyeLens Film Festival on May 28th at Vancouver's historic Rio Theatre.
