International Baccalaureate Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to take Full IB (6 IB Courses)?
NO – You can take anywhere from one to 6 IB courses
If I choose Full IB do I have to stay in it forever
NO, you can move from the IB program to the regular program at any time. You cannot, however, decide to take Full IB after grade ten. It is easier to opt out of Full IB than to opt in.
Is there more homework?
Yes, but this depends on the number of courses you take and the teacher. The important thing is that you manage your time. The nature of the homework tends to be different, though. Less emphasis is placed on repetition. IB homework tends to be more interesting and challenging.
Will my marks suffer if I take IB?
No – you will do more work, but we do not penalize you for taking advanced programs. At LTCHS the guiding principle is that you receive a mark that you likely would have in a regular course.
Can I become involved in other activities such as sports?
Yes – many IB students are active in sports, drama, band etc. At LTCHS we have a period 0 and a period 5 that allow for options such as band and drama.
Most IB students, in fact, do become involved in a wide range of activities outside the classroom including sports, arts, and church activities. The CAS component attempts to give recognition for these activities for Full IB students.
Can I take IB classes if I am in French Immersion?
Yes – If you are in French Immersion you can take IB Chem OR IB Art , IB Biology and IB English.
Can I take IB in Grade 10 without taking the Grade 9 Honours classes?
Yes – This is especially important for those of you attending schools outside of Red Deer Public District. Students can go directly into grade 10 IB courses without 9 Honours courses provided they have the marks to do so.
