PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - 2011- 2012 - Jim Clevette

Greetings to everyone - especially to those who are joining us at Lindsay Thurber for the first time. Welcome back to all of those who are returning for yet another year.  We are happy and excited as we start another year which promises to be very interesting with new opportunities to learn and grow together in a diverse educational environment.

We welcome a number of new staff members to an already exceptional staff who have proven to be caring and supportive of the students in our school.     The 2011 - 2012 school year promises to be a very exciting year and it is my hope that everyone finds success. As we all know, success at school starts in the classroom and we have some exception individuals who have chosen to teach at Thurber for the coming year. We were most fortunate to have Mrs. Judy Windrim transfer from Hunting Hills High School in order to take on the responsibility of our Pathways classroom. As well, Mrs. Shelley Lower transferred from Glendale Science School to take a position in our Students' Assistant Centre as a counselor.  At the same time, Ms. Katrina Neufeld also transferred from Glendale in order to add another well qualified teacher to our Mathematics Department. In the Science department Mrs. Dania Hill agreed to transfer to Thurber to teach the high school science program in French Immersions.  Other additions to the staff include Ms. Tracy Terry who has taken a position in Mathematics Department, Mr. Devin Bennett who, in addition to coaching senior Raiders Football,  will be teaching some Math and English as well as Ms. Christina van Besouw who has a classroom in the Science Park and Ms. Jackie Smith who is taking over for Mrs. Lalor for the first semester.  Finishing off the new teaching staff we also have Ms. Meghan Laye who is working in the Social Studies department and we welcome back Mrs. Jana Setters who will be teaching Mathematics as well as being responsible for the Grade 9 tutorial program,  All in all there are, between professional and support staff, 18 new faces who will be working with students in a variety of ways throughout the year,  Therefore, we would encourage all parents to attend the "Meet the Teacher" night on September 10th at 7:00pm to meet all teachers but especially those staff members who are new to the school and new to your child's educational experience..

So, as I am sure you will agree, there are a number of new and exciting things planned for the 2010-2011 school year at Lindsay Thurber.  I would request that you look at the School's Three Year Plan that is posted on our website to get some insight into all the initiatives planned for the coming school year.  I would also encourage all parents to attend our School Council meetings which are held on the last Monday of the month beginning with our organizational meeting scheduled for Monday, September 29th at 7:00pm in the school library.  If you would like to be involved in our Alumni Association, please watch for further information in the coming months.

In closing, I hope your summer has been filled with warm days, soft breezes, and time with family and friends.  I also hope that you have had the time to reflect, read and pursue special interests.  I am looking forward to everyone's positive spirit and best efforts as we enter a new school year that promises to see new and exciting things that happen at a school that is known nationwide for educational innovation and it's diversity of programs.  That is what makes Ecole Secondaire LINDSAY THURBER High School a lighthouse for excellence and achievement in the interests of our students.
