School Council Minutes for Monday, March 26, 2012

Attendance: Kim Boutestein, Karin Deforest, Kim Witwer, Judy-Ann Wybenga, Bonnie Halford, ,Gerry

Halford, Jo Arnold, Ellen Goruk, Sandy Johnson, Brad Vonkeman, Sandy McLavish, Shelley-Anne Goulet,

John Goulet, Kimberly Streit, Heather Jones, Jim Clevette and Cyndi Ramsfield

 

Meeting called to order at 7:30 pm by Kim Boutestein

1.0 Welcome and Introductions were made. Kim thanked everyone for coming to the meeting.

 

2.0 Agenda Additions – Judy-Ann added Nutrition month to the agenda.

 

3.0 Minutes of the February 27, 2012 meeting were presented for approval.

Karin moved that the minute be approved as presented.

Kim seconded

Carried.

 

4.0 Reports

4.1 Student Council - Julia attended the meeting and presented an update on Student Leadership

activities as follows:

1. Project Kenya

a. Booster Juice Sales

b. Lock-up (April 4th)

e. Charity Golf Tournament

f. Bikram Yoga Karma Classes

 

2. Loveworks

3.2 School Report - Jim introduced Serge Jette, Amanda Stamp and Diane Elder. These 3 staff members,

along with Dan Lower recently returned from a visit to Spain where they looked at various schools which

might be compatible as an exchange school. A powerpoint highlighting their trip was shown and a school

in Tudela (very similar to Thurber) was chosen to be the exchange school.

- Jim showed a video presentation which will be shown to all current grade 9 – 11 students which

highlights the various options open to them, so that they may make an informed decision when choosing

their courses for next year.

- Both the Flexible Staffing plan and Common Planning dates for the 2012/2013 school year were

presented as information. Jim indicated there will be a number of District designated Common Planning

days which will apply to all Red Deer Public schools.

 

3.3 ASCA Report – Brad indicated the annual conference will be held in April – both Kim Witwer and

Kim Boutestein plan to attend. All conference information can be found on the website.

 

3.4 City-Wide Council Meeting Report – Kim and Karin provided a verbal report on the City Wide

Council meeting which was held at Mattie McCullough on March 13th. The school highlighted various

programs within their school such as “Paws and Claws”, Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House and the

leadership program for grade 5 students.

As Red Deer Public has been approved for a new elementary school, public boundary discussions are ongoing

as several schools may be affected. Boundary input can also be submitted through the website.

The Foundation Board is working with schools on literacy. Anyone with funding requests are asked to

contact the Foundation office.

The next City-Wide Council meeting will be held in May at Annie L. Gaetz.

 

3.5 Grad Report – The Grad fashion show was very successful. Over 20 local businesses and 100

students participated.

 

2.0 Old Business – Jim indicated he will provide Town Hall information once the District has completed

their education plan.

Jim reminded parents that the Grade 8 Orientation will be held on 28th and the Parent information evening

will be held on March 29th.

 

5.0 Agenda Addition – Judy-Ann Wybenga highlighted nutrition month and provided information on

energy drinks and their nutritional value (or lack of). She invited everyone to visit their website for further

information.
