FOCUS - A Climate Change Video Contest (Deadline March 15, 2018)
Calling all aspiring student videographers and filmmakers. We want your creativity, your inspiration, and your video-making skills to spread the word about climate change and its impact on our world. Help inspire others to live sustainably and win great prizes! It is with great pleasure that I announce a new student video filmmaker contest - Focus ! Climate Change Student Video Contest. The contest is open to students in Grades 8-12. Students may submit videos in English or French or without dialogue at all (see our creative video examples on our site). The contest invites students (individually or in teams of up to 5 members) to use their imagination and video-making skills to make a short film (maximum 5 minutes) about climate change. Full details are available on our website at: https://kimberley-foundation.org/focus-video-competition/ .
Fantastic prizes can be won ($5,000 for 1st prize, 3 honourable mentions each at $2,500) as well as a public screening of the winning films. Each school of the winning entry will also be awarded $2,500 towards art, science or library acquisitions. We hope some of your students might be inspired to enter. The deadline for video entries is 4:30 pm PST March 15, 2018. We know that deadline is quite distant but we wanted to provide students with a lot of time as we know they have busy schedules, and we thought teachers might like to know about it if they have upcoming units that relate somehow to climate change. Our website has a specific section dedicated to facts, websites, active organizations, and innovations in the area of climate change and mitigation efforts which we hope can also be a useful learning resource. For your information, the Kimberley Foundation is a charitable not-for-profit organization registered in the Province of British Columbia whose aim to is to support unique, self-directed learning experiences that will help change the world.
Mr. Speaker's MLA for a Day - May 6 - 8, 2018 (Deadline to apply is March 23, 2018)
Mr. Speaker’s MLA for a Day will be held at the Alberta Legislature May 6 - 8, 2018. MLA for a Day is a youth conference for Alberta high school students who have a keen interest in current events and the legislative process and who would enjoy debating and discussing issues with other students from around the province. It is a nonpartisan three-day program that gives students an opportunity to network in a professional setting as well as a thorough understanding of parliamentary democracy and their roles and responsibilities as active citizens.
One student from each of Alberta’s 87 constituencies will be selected for this program. Students will meet their elected representatives, tour the Legislature, observe Oral Question Period, participate in a variety of group activities and presentations and have the rare opportunity to debate an issue in the Legislative Assembly Chamber.
Participants are provided with accommodation and meals and are reimbursed for the cost of transportation. There is no program fee.
Students can learn more about the program from their MLA’s constituency office or by visiting our website at: www.assembly.ab.ca/visitor/student_zone
